Stainway
A couple of weeks ago I stained the new deck. It looks a lot sharper than the images. Next step is to seal it with CPES. I just cannot seem to get my ass to the boat and continue. Perhaps next weekend?

Today the boat arrived to the workshop where I will be working on it for over the winter. The main project is a brand spanking new deck.

The baptism
In the end of the summer my boat sunk. The reason is still unclear, but it probably has something to do with the heavy amount of rain during that period in combination with a bilge pump that didn’t work because of a depleted battery. Maybe that’s what caused it. Nothing really serious happened, the worst is some original gauges that were beyond rescue and needs to be replaced. Other...

The art of craft
I recently got this Lie-Nielsen block plane by my lovely (former) colleagues. And today one of them sent me this promo clip from the factory that shows how much craft and work that goes into each and every piece of tool that comes out of the factory. Thanks Johan!

My lathing endeavour
I think it turned out really good, it was heaps of fun and it was many times cheaper than buying one. Just some stain and varnish missing. And the burgee of course.

Burgee meister
I am going to try to lathe myself a new bow pole. It will happen tomorrow. It is supposed to look like this. Stay tuned.

Season begins
After my first season with the boat, alot of work with the engine and so, finally a “maiden voyage” the real season now begins. Scraping the cockpit, making a new lid for the engine box, retouching the steering wheel, fixing the prop and some other things are all on the to-do list.
Here’s a pic from last weekend of her being carried out of the water:

THE Voyage
Probably a feeling pretty close to the one the Wright brothers experienced when flying for the first time. Driving my boat for the first time was insane; Goose bumps, adrenalin, fast pulse and an ear to ear smile.

Vroom Vroom
When buying the boat I had no more info on the engine than that the motor was supposed to be in “ok condition”. Guess the relief I felt when we started it up yesterday after some years out of the water.

Cover-up
I just put on my new boat cover. I did the measuring, and construction design myself and had it made at a Tältcentralen, an old tent specialist in Stockholm. Looks pretty good I think!

It's getting there!
After a week or so of experimenting with retouch pens, sponges, different dip ‘n’ tip painting techniques etc I finally found a way of retouching the putty bungs that didn’t take the stain. It actually starts to look really good. I impregnated the boat with CPES. Two layers, gently sanded and today, belive it or not, I put on the first layer of varnish!!
Here is the CPES...

Tragedy
I started staining the hull today. The wood looks great but the puttied screw holes looks disastrous. Now I’m going down to the garage to suck on the exhaust pipe of my car.

The deck
The deck is temporary fixed. Perhaps next year I will do something more permanent about it but this season I will keep it as it is. I’ve just scraped the deck seams and I will stain it together with the rest of the boat, hopefully on Sunday. More pictures to come soon.

Easter
It’s been a while since last post. I’ve been working hard with the boat though, but without anything interesting to show. Next time I will upload some pictures of the boat before staining. Until then, here’s the Easter to-do-list:
Friday: -Tint putty to mahogany color and fill the screw holes on the deck -Create a caulk scraper -Try out and compare the supposed Interstain with...

Day 17 and 18 - Make-up
A 63-year-old needs some make-up every now and then. Brand by choice is the Famowood Solvent-based mahogany wood filler. Imported for this special occasion from The Wooden Boat Shop, Inc in Cincinatti.
After two days of grooming she now looks like a 14-year-old using Clearasil.

This weekend I finished sanding the deck. It now looks just like a pile of lumber.

Day 14
The end wood of one of the deck planks were damaged and had to be removed. This dutchman repair won’t stand out this much after it has been faired, sanded and of course stained and varnished.

Day 6-8
I’ve been replacing apx. 300 screws the last two days, 1/3 left to go. I have also epoxy repaired the damaged ribs I that holds the deck planks.
I recently got my hullcard from The Mariners Museum’s Chris-Craft archival collection so today I added the boat and its facts to the Chris-Craft Antique Boat Club Hull Registry, go have a look!

Day 5
Today I did a quick and dirty epoxy repair on one of the cracked deck planks that I removed the other day. That’s good enough since I’ve decided already not to change any wood on the deck this season. I still have to remove all the bungs on the deck though and that Is what I started doing after I had been to Pondus and ordered new freeboard planks. Now I’m really looking forward...

Day 4 - day of rest
I’ve learnt that one of the most time consuming things in the boat renovating business is bad planning. So today I spent most time working and planning my renovation process. This was much appreciated by my aching body which is not used to this intense and physical work.
In the absence of in-progress pictures I give you my ‘new’ life-jacket:

Day 3 - I'm screwed
Hundreds and hundreds of German qualität screws and 1100 kronor later I’m totally screwed. This because when I lifted two freeboard planks when replacing some old screws, I found a really bad repair job – the boards were way to thin, but instead of replacing them they have used one piece of thin and dodgy plywood beneath the two boards. Not much to do other than go to Pondus Snickeri...
